Gemini CLI is profiled here as a Coding Assistant tool for engineering teams. Read about features, pricing, and how it compares to related options in the tools directory.
Description
Gemini CLI is an open-source command-line agent from Google, released under the Apache 2.0 license in June 2025. It brings Gemini models into the terminal, where a reason-and-act loop plans multi-step work, edits files, runs shell commands, and grounds answers with Google Search. Signing in with a personal Google account unlocks free daily usage, so individual developers can adopt it without an API key.
Key Capabilities:
Agentic coding loop with built-in file, shell, and web tools
Google Search grounding for answers tied to current sources
MCP support for custom tools and external integrations
GitHub Actions integration for automated issue triage and code review
Checkpointing plus a GEMINI.md context file for project-specific instructions
Shared technology with Gemini Code Assist in VS Code
