Description
Jina AI is a Berlin company founded in 2020 by Han Xiao that builds search foundation models. Its API serves multilingual embeddings, rerankers, and the Reader service, which converts any URL into clean, LLM-ready markdown for grounding pipelines. Model weights ship openly on Hugging Face, and hosted access starts with a free token allowance on a new API key. The Reader endpoints follow a simple URL prefix pattern, so prepending r.jina.ai to any link returns parsed markdown ready for a model.
Key Capabilities:
Multilingual embedding models covering text, images, and code
Reranking models for retrieval precision
Reader API that converts URLs and searches into LLM-ready markdown
Late chunking for context-preserving long-document embeddings
Open model weights published on Hugging Face
REST API with free starter tokens and OpenAI-compatible clients
