Description
Mistral AI is a Paris-based foundation model lab founded in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothee Lacroix, formerly of DeepMind and Meta AI. It publishes open-weight models under Apache 2.0 alongside commercial models served through La Plateforme, its developer API. The lineup spans general chat, reasoning, code generation, and document OCR, with deployment options that extend to on-premises hardware for regulated industries. Le Chat, the company's assistant product, runs on the same models and gives teams a hosted interface for evaluating output quality before API integration.
Key Capabilities:
Open-weight and commercial model families for chat, reasoning, and code
La Plateforme API with a free experimentation tier
Codestral models for code completion and fill-in-the-middle
Mistral OCR for document understanding pipelines
Fine-tuning API for custom model variants
On-premises and VPC deployment for regulated environments
