Windsurf
Agentic code editor with codebase-wide flow awareness
Description
Windsurf Editor is a code editor built by the team behind Codeium and now operated by Cognition AI following its July 2025 acquisition. Launched in November 2024, the editor treats AI as a first-class collaborator through Cascade, an agent that tracks edits, terminal commands, and clipboard activity to maintain context across multi-file coding tasks. Windsurf runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Key Capabilities:
Cascade agent for multi-file edits, documentation generation, terminal execution, and test suite creation
Flow awareness that tracks developer actions including edits, shell commands, and clipboard to adapt without repeated prompting
Multi-model access covering Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5.5, GPT-5-Codex, and the proprietary SWE 1.5 model with image understanding
Built-in browser and live preview for visual editing with element selection and instant reshaping
Devin cloud agent integration for delegating tasks to autonomous execution on separate VMs
MCP integration for custom tooling through the Windsurf Plugin store
Memories, rules, and workflows with autogenerated slash commands for reusable agent behavior
JetBrains extension bringing Cascade to IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, and WebStorm
SOC 2 Type 2 compliance with cloud, self-hosted, on-premise, and air-gapped deployment options
One-click deploy, shared conversations, GitHub PR review, and voice input for chat
