OpenAI Playground
Browser-based prompt iteration environment for the OpenAI API.
Description
OpenAI Playground is the official prompt testing and management interface inside the OpenAI Platform, launched alongside the GPT-3 API beta in June 2020. The product gives developers a UI to draft prompts, tune parameters, and publish versioned prompts for use in production code through Universal Prompt IDs. It works only with OpenAI models, including GPT-5, GPT-4o, the GPT-4.1 family, and the o-series reasoning models.
Key Capabilities:
Multi-model access across GPT-5, GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and o-series reasoning models
Parameter controls for temperature, top_p, max_tokens, penalties, and reasoning effort
Project-level prompt versioning with Universal Prompt IDs for production reference
Generate feature for meta-prompting from task descriptions
Optimize feature for detecting contradictions and unclear instructions in prompts
Variables and placeholders for separating static prompts from runtime inputs
Function calling, structured outputs, and JSON mode testing in the UI
Eval integration with pass/fail tracking linked to Prompt IDs
